Support for Businesses
Many New Westminster business owners have poured their heart and soul into their shops, restaurants, and industries – providing local goods and services to our community and the province. These businesses add to the vibrancy and character of our neighbourhoods and they help make New Westminister such a special place to live.
During this pandemic, people in New Westminster are worried about their health, their housing, their own livelihood and the livelihood of their employees. We’ve seen our community band together to support local businesses – but there is still uncertainty. I want to reassure you that our government has your back.
We’re taking real first steps to help people and businesses. At the end of March, our government announced a $5 billion COVID-19 Action Plan to help British Columbians impacted by the pandemic. For the most up-to-date information on supports and services please visit www.gov.bc.ca/covid19.
Provincial relief for businesses:

The School Tax rate for business, and light and major industry has been cut in half for 2020.

Federal support for small and medium sized businesses:
The Government of Canada has announced that they are providing a 75% wage subsidy for impacted businesses who keep employees on the payroll, as well as interest-free loans to small businesses and non-profits, and credit support for small and medium sized enterprises.
Our government has already begun working with business and labour leaders from across the province to assemble an Economic Recovery Task Force to build an economic stimulus plan and have allocated $1.5 billion to support economic recovery. These are the first steps we are taking to support businesses across the province.
If you have any feedback or questions about our COVID-19 Action Plan, please do not hesitate to get in touch with my constituency office. We can be reached by phone at 604-775-2101 or through email at judy.darcy.MLA@leg.bc.ca.
Whether your business has paused operations, changed operating practices, or is on the frontlines providing essential services, thank you for taking steps to help keep us all safe. Our government will continue to take steps to support people and businesses. We will get through this together.
